Joseph E. Hatch of Wells, Me was born in Maine on June 2, 1819. He was a shoemaker living in Wells, Me. when he enlisted as a private in Co. E, 27th Maine Inf. On July 17, 1863 he mustered out of Portland, Me. On June 10, 1864 he died and was buried at Ocean View Cemetery. The Medal of Honor he had been awarded was revoked in 1917, along with those of the entire regiment. The medals had been awarded merely for reenlisting, which the majority of the men did not even do, but because the records were lost the medal was given to the entire regiment. His wife was Angeline (or Angelina) Hatch who was born in Maine in 1824. They had a son Amos G. Perkins (sic) who was born in Maine in 1864.
