Francis Butland was a Civil War veteran who served with the
27th Maine Regiment. This regiment was the subject of the book 'A Shower of Stars' by John Pullen. In 1864 Abraham
Lincoln was concerned about protecting the capitol. The men
of the 27th were offered Medals of Honor to extend thier
enlistment. Less than half the regiment extended. Because of an error the whole regiment was awarded the medal. In 1917 a review board decided that extending ones enlistment
does not meet the criteria for the medal. All the medals,
including those of the men who did extend, were revoked.
Francis Butland was not one of the men who extended.
