Wife of James Adams, first settler of St Johnsbury and later pioneered in Newport then in Canada.
The original stone, reportedly an oblong of fine dark slate; was smashed into dozens of pieces by a falling limb in 1982, a new replica of fine grain black stone copying this pattern was errected in 1984 at a cost of $710 [news.article]; it is retangular with incised lines on it and a double circle with a face - eyes connected to the nose, and an oval mouth; 2-1/2 feet tall.
Edward T. Fairbanks wrote in his 1914 "History of St Johnsbury": "Mrs. Submit Adams died Nov. 18, A.D. 1790, aged 67, as we read on her grave stone"; this was a transcription error.
