Ellen Allen Dittebrandt was born on January 13th, 1962 in Charleston, South Carolina’s Naval hospital.

An artist for many years, Ellen worked in both pastel and acrylic. In recent years she specialized in large acrylic paintings often depicting complex and colorful scenes of the tangle of nature. She worked tirelessly to produce exquisite one-of-a-kind paintings that brought the outdoors indoors on a grand scale. Her paintings can be found in private homes as well as corporations throughout the United States.

Ellen was also a talented, committed triathlete and a 3rd degree black belt. Each day, she redefined what was possible as she swam, biked, or ran. Friends marveled at her endurance. There were no limits to what she would attempt or accomplish.

Ellen was a dedicated firefighter and EMT. She was a volunteer for many Gorge fire departments. (The Dalles, Mosier and Hood River Fire Stations). She was named Volunteer Firefighter of the Year in Mosier in 2011 and in Hood River in 2013..

In the midst of a 120-mile early-morning ride Ellen died when a fatigued driver drifted into her on the shoulder of the road. Though Ellen’s departure was abrupt and our hearts are shattered, we are left with her vision of how to live with these, her own words:

“Be Positive” even if it is just a smile, or nice words. Be the peace you want to see. Be the love you want to feel. Be kind. Be understanding. Be a friend, be the change you want to see. We are here to enjoy life".

Survived by brothers Karl Dittebrandt and Earl Dittebrandt and Judith Cunningham Dittebrandt of Mosier.

A Memorial service was held Sunday, August 31, 2014, at the Mosier Community School.
