Marcelle Avery

Feb. 18, 1912 - Apr. 5, 2009

Marcelle passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2009 at the age of 97 years. She was born February 18, 1912 to Morton and Louise Avery. She was raised in the Avery Hotel, which her parents operated during her childhood. She attended the Avery Elementary School. Marcelle had an active childhood and was especially fond of horses, as she owned her first horse at the age of eight. She enjoyed riding her horse with friends throughout the Avery and Sheep Ranch area.

Due to the fact there was no daily transportation to Angels Camp at the time she graduated from Elementary School, her parents had her live with members of the family to be able to attend Sacramento High School. While she was in high school she played girls' basketball and was actively involved in school activities. Following graduation she attended college at San Jose State and then transferred to Chico State for her final year in college. After graduating with her degree and teaching credential in 1934, she was signed to teach at the Altaville Grammar School. Her first contract as a teacher was for $1300 a year. During her time as a teacher in the Altaville School District she did teach in the one room schoolhouse that is now designated as an historical monument. She later moved to the Mark Twain Grammar School, after the elementary schools in Altaville and Angels Camp were consolidated. She retired in 1974 after teaching or 40 years, and is remembered as a teacher who held her students accountable, but was also very caring about her students' personal needs.

After retiring, Marcelle moved back to Avery into a summer home she had previously built. Marcelle was very close to her sister, Wilma Naygrow, who passed away in 1995. The two of them traveled extensively worldwide after Marcelle's retirement. They visited parts of South America, Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. Her favorite trip was to Rio de Janeiro in 1987. In 2002 Marcelle moved to the Foothill Village Retirement complex in Angels Camp.

Marcelle was a member of the Eastern Star, Native Daughters of the Golden West, American Association of University Women, California Teachers Association, National Retired Teachers Association, Ebbetts Pass Investment Club and Independent Hall Quilters. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Murphys. Marcelle was a rabid fan of the San Francisco Giants and the 49ers.

Never married and without children of her own, Marcelle was a family oriented person who maintained contact with her extended families. She is survived by many cousins.

Private graveside services will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Murphy's First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 48, Murphys, CA 95247. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 9 at Foothill Village Assisted Living, 1440 Foothill Village Dr., Angels Camp.
