Prominent International Attorney. Born Daniel Paul Ryan, Jr. to Daniel Paul Ryan, Sr. and Ann Ward Ryan of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Dan graduated Valedictorian from Blanket High School in Blanket, Texas in 1952, received a B.A. from Texas A&M in 1956, then a J.D. from Texas Law School in 1959. He was an officer in the U.S. Army Reserves attaining the rank of Captain before being honorably discharged in 1968. He was a lineal descendant of Opothleyahola, the Muscogee Creek Indian chief who led Creek forces against the US Government during the first two Seminole Wars, and who sheltered runaway slaves, free blacks, Chickasaw and Seminole Indians during the Civil War.
Dan Ryan practiced law for over 30 years both domestically and abroad. He was an Assistant District Attorney for Harris County, Texas (Houston) and ultimately established his own law firm in 1969, the notable Houston law firm of Ryan & Dawson. He continued in private practice until his retirement in 1997.
He was admitted to practice in all Texas State Courts, Federal Courts, and the U.S Supreme Court. He was a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, Diplomat of the American Board of Trial Advocates; the International Society of Barristers, a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Houston and American Bar Associations and the Texas Aggie Bar Association.
Dan raised Angus cattle and lived with his family on a sizeable ranch in Dubina, Texas for over 25 years. He was remarried in 1999 to Carol Kirby of Greenville, Kentucky and resided in Houston for a number of years after retirement before relocating to their Toledo Bend Lakefront home in Many, Louisiana.
Dan Ryan, one of Houston's most laureate and successful attorneys, succumed to complications from a stroke while battling Alzheimer's disease. Dan was well loved and admired by his family and his numerous friends and colleagues both in and out of the legal profession and the judiciary. He was known for his generosity and sharing of his considerable wealth and prosperity.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Carolyn Kirby Ryan; his five children: Daniel Paul Ryan III and his wife, Monica; Kyle Ryan and his wife, Stephanie; Dana Ryan McKenna; Kate Ryan (Mrs. John) Williams; and Sharon Ryan McKenna; three siblings: Pat Ryan and his wife, Jeffre; Ward Ryan; and Ellen Ryan (Mrs. Ed) Wasiuta; six grandchildren and two adoring pets named Gypsy and Saturn.
A memorial service was held in Houston Unity Christian Church to accommodate his many mourners.
Cremated, Ashes given to family or friend.
Specifically: Ashes kept by his loving wife, Carol.
