Official report of the Adjutant General's Office on 14 Oct 1864 showed removal of the desertion charge, by reason of re-enlistment in Co. H, 25th O.V.I. as a veteran on 24 Dec 1863 at Hannibal, Missouri by Lt. Cast for 3 years. He was transferred to 75th O.V.I. on 12 Jan 1864, then transferred back to Co. C, 25th O.V.I. on 13 Jun 1864 at Pope's Plantation. He was serving as company cook in rosters for Aug 1864, July 1865 & April 1866. He mustered out at Columbus, Ohio on 18 June 1866.
The 1890 Veterans Census for Murphy District, Ritchie County, West Virginia shows Jacob had resettled there. The 1900 Wirt Co., WV Census shows his Ohio birth in January 1837. It lists Rachel Stallings, his wife of 37years (who became administratrix of his estate in Wirt County in Dec. 1903) with children Jessie E., Melrose H., Vivian E., & grandson Roy H. Tribbett. It showed Rachel had 9 of 11 living children.
Jacob's widow, Rachel Stallings Bailey lived until 30 March, 1925. She died at Gypsy R.F.D., Shinns Run, Harrison County, WV and was interred in Shinnston Masonic Ce., Shinnston, WV.
A fellow Ohioan in Co. C 25th Ohio Infantry, Sgt John W. Pierce , who was with him at several battles, was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg, and is buried in Gettysburg National Cemetery.
The record shows Jacob H. Bailey was a strong and resilient man who diligently served his country and his people despite serious personal injury!
