As a resident of Nauvoo, Illinois; he became a close friend of the Prophet Joseph Smith of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He furnished the row boat for Joseph and his brother Hyrum to row across the Mississippi River to hide from the mobs and flee to the Rocky Mountains, but ended up rowing back to Nauvoo after pleading from the Prophet's wife. Joseph Smith was soon arrested and Aaron accompanied the Prophet to Carthage as a member of the Nauvoo guard. After the Prophet's death, Aaron eventually led a wagon company to Utah under the leadership of Brigham Young. Afterwards he was sent to settle Springville and was called as the first Bishop there.
