An injury received when his sprint car overturned proved fatal to Cecil "Bud" Abell, WW2 veteran.
Abell, an employee of the Mitchell Motor Sales, had just completed his qualification run for the Sunday afternoon race
program when his machine, still traveling at high rate of speed, went into a spin at the West end of the track. The car plunged over a steep embankment and after overturning several times landed several feet from the track.
He was taken to Dunn Memorial Hospital in a Sherwood and Ferguson ambulance, stationed at the track for emergency purposes. He died within an hour of being admitted.
The son of Leslie and Mary K.Abell, he was born and raised in Mitchell. he was never married.
He attended Mitchell public schools and left his studies at Mitchell High School in 1943 to enlist in the United States Navy in which he served in the Pacific area of operations. He was awarded nine Battle Stars during service and was honorably discharged on March 6, 1946.
The car Bud crashed was thought to be the same car his friend Bob West was killed in.
