Robert A. "RJ" Johnson, longtime art director and illustrator for the Bridgeton Evening News, died Wednesday evening, June 20, 2007, at South Jersey Healthcare-Regional Medical Center in Vineland, after suffering cardiac arrest 10 days ago.

"RJ" was 57 and was a lifelong resident of Bridgeton. He was born in Bridgeton, and graduated from Bridgeton High School with the class of 1969.

Several years ago, he worked at the former Mr. Big1s Department Store in Bridgeton as the assistant store manager .

An artist from a young age, he was self-employed for many years with providing area businesses and individuals with illustrations, computer graphics, logo designs, advertising campaigns and cartoons. Over the years he also designed signs and hand lettered cars, trucks and boats. While he was self-employed, he was well known as the layout artist for the Evening News. He worked there from 1978 until 1990 and was responsible for the graphic design for most of the newspaper as well as promotional materials needed for circulation pieces.

In 1990, he went to work for Cumberland County and for 13 years served as a graphic designer, and ran the county recycling, Clean Communities and Adopt-A-Road programs. During that time he attended Cook College at Rutgers University and received continuing education certification. He also held a certificate as a N.J. Recycling Professional and one for Web Design. During "RJ1s" tenure with the county, he received awards for graphic arts and illustrations made for the Empowerment Zone application process, the N.J. Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He was also honored by the Metro Art Service of N.Y.C and the N.J. Press Association.<

Most recently, he worked at Kohl1s Department store in Millville.

"RJ" was a former president and member of the Bridgeton Area Jaycees and served on the Bridgeton Housing Authority as a commissioner from 1984 until 1995. He was a member of the 5th Ward AA, the Italian-American Political Club and a former member of the Bridgeton Elks. For many years he helped organize and run the Bridgeton Evening News Golf Tournament. He also helped run the Thursday night golf league at Holly Hills. Gardening, golfing and cooking were his three favorite pastimes.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, R. Denise (nee Roberts) Johnson; two daughters, Dr. Heather Rachelle Johnson of Newark, Del., and Summer Brooke Issertell and her husband, Patrick V. of Bridgeton; his mother and stepfather, Diane Gentile and Giacomo "Larry" Gentile of Hopewell Twp.; one sister, Linda Sue Criswell of Fla.; and four brothers, Guy N. Johnson and Gary Lee Johnson both of Bridgeton, Alan L. Johnson of Seaville, and Giacomo "Jake" Gentile Jr. of Bridgeton.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon, June 25 at 5 o1clock at the FREITAG FUNERAL HOME, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton where friends will be received from 3 until 5. The interment will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are requested to the Bridgeton Stadium Foundation, c/o Colonial Bank, 85 W. Broad St., Bridgeton, NJ 08302.
