James Alexander Bebout enlisted with a group of neighbors, men from Amwell Township,Washington County, Pennsylvania, on 22 Aug 1862. On 2 Jul 1863, while serving as a Corporal in Co. D, 140th Pennsylvania Infantry, he was killed in fighting at The Wheatfield. His burial place is unknown, but it is assumed he was buried on the battlefield or nearby.
