James T. Absher

RAVEN, Va. - James T. Absher, 90, of the Road Ridge Section of Raven, Va., went to meet his Lord, May 31, 2005, surrounded by his family and friends, singing his favorite hymn, "Amazing Grace," following a lengthy illness.

Born in Tazewell County, Va., he was the son of the late Charles Allen and Rena Belle Chambers Absher, both Tazewell County natives. He was a lifelong resident of the Raven area. He was a retired, self-employed logger and excavator and a retired coal miner. He was a member of the Fork Ridge House of Prayer Church in Raven.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Green Absher; one son; Thurman David Absher; three sisters, Mattie Stilwell, Artie Keen and Maxie Williams; four brothers, Dewey, Roy, Lloyd and William Absher.



Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Karen Johnson and husband, Danny of Raven, Mrs. Lois Osborne and husband, Tommy of Raven; six sons, Jerry Absher and wife, Emma of Raven, Travis Absher and wife, Margaret of Raven, Joel Absher of Raven, Charles Wayne Absher and wife, Aleta of Versailees, Ky., Coy Absher and wife, Effie of Raven, Larry Absher and wife, Carol of Raven Nest Branch; daughter-in-law, Linda Absher of Greensboro, N.C.; former daughter-in-Law, Mary Lou Absher of Raven; two sisters, Rosa Messick of Pounding Mill, Va., Nell Buckles of Northern Virginia; special friend and caregiver, Jeanette Vandyke; 15 grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; special caregivers, Evelyn Grimsley, Michelle Johnson, Stephanie Mullins and Golden Age Retirement Home Staff.

Funeral services for James T. Absher will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, June 3, 2005, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel, Richlands, with the Rev. David Horton and Rev. Eddie Hess officiating. Entombment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Va.

Pallbearers will be Ryan Johnson, Shaw Absher, Kevin Sparks, Nathaniel Smith, Kenny Absher and Travis Absher. Honorary pallbearers will be T.R. Barrett, Arnold Short, Louis and Margaret Hunter, Louis Short and Dr. Larry Mitchell.
