Jesse Cole married a cousin, Nancy Nichols, on July 9, 1848, in Marion County, Illinois. It is not known who Nancy's parents were. ["Nancy Jane" was given as her name on son, Simon Jesse's listing in "Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index 1916-1947" on ancestry.com]

Jesse Cole was Nancy's second husband. She first married Nimrod Newman on September 23, 1845, in Marion County. He apparently died (have found no record though) and she married Jesse Cole. She and Jesse had two sons, Simon Jesse (my great-grandfather) born December 7, 1852, and Harvey born in 1854. Nancy died in 1854 (?in childbirth?, per family tradition). Jesse Cole died March 18, 1860, so the two little boys were orphans at ages 8 and 6, respectively.

Interestingly, the two boys are found in 3 different households in three different counties in the 1860 Illinois Federal Census! They are shown in the household of their uncle Harvey Bransford Nichols in Marion County, with Nicholas and Lavinia Workman in Clinton County, and with Urial and Elizabeth Farmer in Fayette County.

Inscription

According to two of our family historians, it is pretty much accepted that Jesse Cole is buried in Magassi Cemetery. No tombstone has been located however. Jesse's brother, Harvey Bransford Nichols, is buried there and a family letter indicates their father, Bird, was buried there. Bird's second wife, Zillah Morris Farmer Nichols, (Jesse Cole's stepmother) also has a gravestone there. Also per the family letter, Zillah and Bird were separated at the time of his death. Her grown children by her marriage to Benjamin Farmer supposedly were against her marriage to Bird. When she died "FARMER" was put on her tombstone even though her name was Nichols--the widow of Bird Nichols.
