John Alfs was born October 9, 1876, in Oldenburg, Germany. His parents were John D. Alfs and Anna, nee Blankenmeier. Throught the holy sacrament of baptism, he was received by the Lord as His child, and after being confirmed, he entered into full rights and privileges of a Christian and as a member of the Lutheran Church and frequently partook of the Lord's Supper, which sacrament he received shortly before his death.

He came to the United States in 1886, and settled in Missouri. In 1910 he came to Nebraska, where he lived in Shickley for several years. In 1913 he settled in Colorado and has since that time resided in Hereford, Col. After a lingering illness, he underwent a serious operation in Kimball, Neb. Friday, August 20, 1943, the Lord called him Home. He attained the age of 72 years, 10 months and 11 days.

One sister, who died in infancy, and one brother preceded him in death. he is mourned by his brother, Bernard Alfs of Shickley, by several nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, August 25, at Zion Lutheran Church in Shickley. Music was rendered by a quartet, Mrs. Lou Gratopp, Luella Bohlen, Billie Gratopp and Rev. John Raabe. He was laid to rest in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
