George Lewis Coleman, Jr. died on January 28, 2016 on the same property on which he was born in 1927. He was the son of George Lewis, Sr. and Pearle McWilliams Coleman of Travelers Rest.
In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his wife, Jane Templeton Coleman and his wife, Robbie Putnam Coleman.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Patrick Coleman of the home; children: Betty Coleman Davis and her husband Tom of Debordieu, SC and Athens, GA and Gregory Lewis Coleman and his wife Sally of Travelers Rest; his step-children: Jack Ellenberg and his wife Dixie of Hollywood, SC and Coleman Dixon and her husband Michael of Greenville, SC; ten grandchildren: Temple Davis McLanahan and her husband Rhodes, and Kelli Davis Neil and her husband Chris, all of Athens, GA, Stephen Davis and his wife Deidre of Homewood, AL, Jake Coleman and his wife Kellie, of Greenville, Sarah Coleman currently of Charleston, SC, Brian, Britton and Banks Ellenberg of Hollywood, SC, and Natalie and Caroline Dixon of Greenville; and six great-grandchildren: William, Davis, and Clara McLanahan, Emma Jane and Harmon Neil, Thomas Davis; and his sister: Mary Jo Hunt of Pickens, SC.
George was proud to be a part of George Coleman Ford, a four generation, family held business started by his father in 1930. He served the company in numerous capacities including owner, Dealer Principal, and Chairman. He was active in the professional organizations of the South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association and the National Automobile Dealers Association. He served on the Advertising Board of the Carolina Ford Dealers. He was an emeritus member of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Travelers Rest and an emeritus member of the Board of Shriners Hospital for Children, having served on the application committee for decades. He was an original member of the Mobile Color Guard, and a charter member of the Good Time Supper Club. He belonged to the Cooper Masonic Lodge, Hejaz Shrine and the Greenville Chapter of the Royal Order of the Jester. He was a member of the Greenville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.
George fine tuned the art of living well. His faith, great love of family and deep-rooted friendships enhanced everything that he took on. He loved hunting and fishing and delighted in sharing those passions with others. He especially enjoyed hosting rabbit hunting and fishing excursions for the Hunt of a Lifetime. It was not only the outdoor sports that he loved but the dogs, the locations, the preparations, the paraphernalia and the camaraderie that went with them. Having majored in Civil Engineering at Clemson College, a military school, George was a devoted Tiger fan, enjoying several sports, and especially going to almost every home football game and many away games.
