Born 1901 to parents Hilliard R. Qualls (b.1878 Georgia, d.1958 California) and Mabel E. Farnsworth (b.1879 California, d.1902 California). Mother Mabel died roughly nine months after Gladys' birth. Father Hilliard resided with his father John Qualls (or Quarles, b.1822 Georgia, d. after 1910 California) at time. They were no doubt ill-suited to care for an infant, as both worked. Gladys was initially cared for by her grandmother Elizabeth Farnsworth and later by her aunt Hazel Farnsworth. This was confirmed (through another contributor) from first-hand statements from the children of Hazel Farnsworth. And thus, she apparently went by the name of Gladys Farnsworth in her youth, never using the surname Qualls. Census record for 1910 not yet located. Married Merle Franklin Miller circa 1919, and they lived with aunt Hazel Farnsworth-Bishop and Hazel's family in Bend, Oregon, per 1920 census. At least two children: Constance Evelyn Miller-Tyson (b.1920, d.2013 Oregon) and Richard Franklin Miller (b.1921, d.2005 Oregon). Resided in Bend, Oregon, per 1930 and 1940 censuses. Husband Merle farmed and sold firewood. Gladys worked as a maid and/or waitress. Marriage ended after 20+ years, circa 1943-1944. During next few years Gladys resided in both Sacramento and Georgetown, where both Qualls and Farnsworth family members lived or had lived. In Georgetown, Gladys met her second husband Elmer Sartor Francis (b.1913, d.1995). They married in 1947, and resided in Sacramento for most of their remaining years. However, they kept ties to Georgetown and are buried together there.
