James Clinton Boykin, beloved son of the late Howard Taft Boykin and the late Ruth Barnes Boykin Smith was born in Wilson, North Carolina on December 29, 1939.
James began his education in Wilson, North Carolina. In 1943 James parents relocated their family to Baltimore, Maryland, where James completed his education in The Baltimore City Public Schools System.
"JC or Jay", as he was called by all who loved and knew him, taught himself to play a guitar, and to read and write music in his young teens. James undeniable talents, love and dedication to music led him to become a member of a band called The Side Winders. James met many famous people while traveling to different Cities around The United States. After many years, James left the band and continued to play at various Night-Clubs and Events in New York City.
In 1977 James lived with his cousin; Wanda and her three children; Victor, Pamela and Sherri. James was a father figure helping to raise, discipline, nurture, educate, love and most of all, tease them!, for eight years.
Education was always very important to James. Later in James life he attended The Brooklyn College and received his Bachelor Of Arts in African Studies. After completing his education, James was part-time tutor at The Medgar Evers and a special education teacher for The Board Of Education.
James was a loving, kind and free spirit person. James loved to sing, dance and play his guitar. James loved jokes and creating nicknames for everyone. James loved to talk and always had a story to tell, sharing his experiences and wisdom. James loved a challenge and an argument and insisted he knew everything and couldn't be beat at anything!-after all, James was "The Wiz!" James loved to eat but was very health conscious and exercised daily.
On Saturday, May 10, 2003 at The Brooklyn Hospital God silently called James into His Heavenly Home. James will be sincerely missed by all who loved and knew him.
Two sisters, Edna Ruth Boykin and Cora Mae Boykin Cook preceded James in death.
James leaves to cherish his loving memories: three aunts, Odessa Boykin, Mildred and Linda Barnes; four uncles, DeArthur, Wiley, Bobby and Billy Barnes; two daughters, April and Debbie; one son, Eric; one sister, Helen Bazemore; one brother, Edward Lee Boykin; one godson, Jonathan Land and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; and other relatives and friends.
