Richard Bendish was born April 13, 1943, in Fort Rice, to John and Anna (Rebenitsch) Bendish. He was born and raised in Fort Rice. He attended St. Mary's High School and after high school he farmed in Fort Rice for a short time.

Richard and Mary (Fleck) were married April 20, 1966, in Solen. Together they raised their four children in Fort Rice.

Richard had an entrepreneurial spirit. He owned the Fort Rice Bar, a bait shop, and a convenience store at different times during his life. He was always willing to help his friends and neighbors. He could build anything and built various buildings, garages and barns for anyone who asked.

Richard was an outdoor enthusiast. He loved to hunt and fish, especially with his grandchildren. He was an avid gardener and took pride in sharing his vegetables and sweet corn.

Richard devoted 28 years of his time and talents through his service as a Morton County Commissioner. He served on the Morton County Social Service Board, as president of the North Dakota Association of Counties, the Board of Directors of the North Dakota Insurance Reserve Fund, Peace Officers Standards and Training Board, West Central Human Services, Community Works, and various other groups and agencies. He spent several Legislative Sessions as a lobbyist advancing the interests of these groups. Most recently he served as President of the Mandan Rural Fire Board.

Richard will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Mary; his children: Russell and Debbie Bendish, (Emily, Richard, and Anna); Stacey and Celeste Bendish, (Cierra, Jacob, CaSandra, Stacey II, and Christian); and Steven Bendish, all of Mandan; and Annette and Michael Frey (Zachary and Marissa), Bismarck. He is also survived by his sisters, Agnes (Harley) Jennings, Washburn, Gladys (Alton) Bauer, Herried, S.D., Carol (Donald) Hatzenbuhler, Solen, and Rita (Gordon) Cermak, Mandan; and his sister-in-law, Sharon Bendish, Fort Rice.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Arnold.
