Enlisted as a 22 yr. old resident of Newton, Jasper Co., Ia. on July 15, 1861 at Burlington, Ia. by Capt. S.H. Chapman. Born in Hocking Co., Ohio, 22 yrs. old, 5'9", light complexion, blue eyes, light hair and by occupation a farmer. Wounded in head slightly Sept. 19, 1862 at Battle of Iuka, Ms. Died Aug. 26, 1863 in McPherson Hospital, 17th Army Corps., Vicksburg, Ms. of chronic diarrhea. Deceased was 24 yrs. old. Was in skirmishes before New Madrid, Mo. and in Battles of Iuka and Corinth, Ms. Oct. 3 & 4, 1862, Jackson May 14, 1862, Champion Hill, Ms. May 16, 1863 and in the siege of Vicksburg. Effects: 1 hat, 1 flannel sack coat, 1 pr. trousers, 1 pr. cotton drawers, 1 flannel shirt, 1 pr. shoes, 1 pr. socks, 2 blankets, 1 port-monie and $42.00 in money. All of which are in store at the hospital to be disposed of by a council of Administration. Probably buried near hospital and moved later to the National Cemetery in Vicksburg, Ms. where he was probably buried as an unknown U.S. soldier.
