Hayden was born in Macon County on a farm near Macon City, Missouri on May 28th, 1846. He served as an Army Sergeant Company D 42nd Missouri Infantry during the Civil War. At the age of 35 he married Ella Gooch in Kirksville, Missouri. To this union was born a son Roscoe (1881) and a daughter Eileen (1887). Hayden died at the age of 70 and is buried at Greenmount Cemetery. His wife Ella died 6 years later and is buried at Greenmount Cemetery as well.
