His occupation as given in the US Census was: Sailor (1850), Master mariner (1860), and Sea captain (1880). Information can be found in the book, Searsport Sea Captains, published 1960 by the Penobscot Marine Museum. During the Civil War he served in the Infantry Coast Guard, Company A.
He married Aug. 6, 1846 Hester Ann Harriman, and they had the following children: Charles Bryant Devereux (1847-1893), Alvaretta Devereux (1849-1922), Melvina Devereux (1852-1929), Hester Devereux (1857-1888), Mary Harriman Devereux (1859-1936), and Daniel H. Devereux (1861-1949).
