Mrs. Aldredge, Civic Leader, Dies

Mrs. Sawnie Robertson Aldredge, 83, of 4704 St. Johns, a Dallas Civic leader for more than 60 years, died Monday in Dallas.

The widow of Sawnie R. Aldredge, mayor of Dallas from 1921-23, she had involved herself with Dallas civil life before and after his death.

She was a founder of the Women's Council of Dallas County, the Dallas Society for Crippled Children and the Dallas County Heritage Society.

In addition to serving as president of each of these groups, she was president of the Junior League of Dallas, the Founders' Garden Club and the Dallas Women's Club.

Mrs. Aldredge led a group of women who stood before a bulldozer to prevent the destroyal (sic) of the historic Miller mansion in Old City Park.

This action led to the founding of the Heritage Society in the 1960s and to her winning the Zonta Service Award in 1973.

She was also instrumental in establishing the Meals on Wheel program.

A member of a pioneer Texas family, she was born in Bastrop, Texas, and graduated from the University of Texas.

Funeral services will e held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Church of The Incarnation. Entombment will be in Hillcrest Mausoleum.

She is survived by one daughter, a sister, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Batts, Robert Tobin, Dr. Richard Floyd, Ravsh Aldredge, Charles Best II. If desired, memorials may be sent to the Dallas Society for Crippled Children, 5701 Maple Ave., Dallas County Heritage Society, 3608 Drexel, or the charity of your choice.
