Raymond LaVergne Hammond, age 91, of Spring Valley, Wisconsin died Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at the Spring Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Ray was born September 16, 1920, the son of LaVergne and Clara (Rable) Hammond at Hatchville, Wisconsin. He attended Elmwood School graduating with the Class of 1937. Ray entered the U.S. Army and served during WWII.
On April 21, 1953 he married Marian Bakke at Peace Lutheran Church in Menomonie. They were blessed with two sons, Paul and Gary.
Ray operated his Hammond Construction for a number of years. He worked road construction most of his life and drove truck and operated a grader and unit shovel. He helped build the Eau Galle Dam in Spring Valley, and later worked for Spring Lake Township as Patrolman. He served on the church council at St. John's Lutheran Church – Hatchville and was presently a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Elmwood.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother Marvin Hammond; and brother-in-law Floyd Timm.
Survivors include his wife Marian; sons Paul (Brenda) Hammond of Jenks, Oklahoma; and Gary Hammond of Spring Valley; one granddaughter: Esther Hammond; one sister Jeanette Timm of Spring Valley; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation was on Saturday from 4-6 p.m. at Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley. Funeral service was on Sunday, November 13, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Hatchville, Wisconsin with Rev. Martin Wegner officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, Military Honors were performed by Crain-Ottman American Legion Post 207 of Elmwood.
Honorary bearers were Mark Jimos, Jason Jimos, Bob Meier, Scott Wood, and Marsha Brunkhorst. Pallbearers were Raymond Timm, Roger Timm, Barry Wentlandt, Terry Shafer, Mike Fitzjarrell, and Mike Wentlandt.
