James Martin Barnett was a widower. He was also part Native American. He was the son of Elizabeth Benjey Barnett and James Silas Barnett, who were both born in Virginia. Elizabeth Benjey's family line has several Native Americans traceable to it.

He was born in Harlan County, KY. On Feb 15, 1859, he married Sarah Jane Robbins, daughter of Elizabeth Crawford Robbins and William Michael Robbins.

It is said of the family of his wife Sarah Jane Robbins and his in-laws: "[William] Michael Robbins, who came to Bell County in 1836, married [Elizabeth] Betty [Ann] Crawford and settled near Colmar. Their children: (1) John C. Robbins, (2) Mary Robbins, who married Rev. James Van Bever, (3) Sarah Robbins, who married James Barnett. A large family was born to this union, among those who living are (1) Prof. R. W. Barnett, (2) Jackson Barnett, (3) Moses Barnett, (4) Charles Barnett." See History of Bell County, pages 146 and 147.

Five years after his first wife Sarah Jane died, he married his neighbor Serelda Denny, a single mother, on November 8, 1889 in Pineville, Bell County, KY. She already had one son Thomas Denny from a relationship with Elias Drake Wright of Bell County, KY.

James and Serelda had 2 daughters together--Sudie or Suda and Marget.

Marget was born in 1894 and Sudie was born in 1897.

In 1900, after his death, Serelda continued to farm the land and his sons James Jr and Moses lived next door.
