|Birth: ||Jul. 4, 1786|
|Death: ||Jan. 31, 1870|
Born in Lanesboro, Mass. Moved to Marengo County, Alabama in 1810. Came to Leon County, Texas in 1853.
Dr. Pitkin BARNES was born 04 July 1786 in Lanesborough, Berkshire County, MA. He was the fourth child of six of Joseph BARNES Jr. & Sybil BUCK. For more information on Pitkins siblings as well as his parents & grandparents, see my entry for his father Joseph BARNES Jr. in Memorial # 44547060. Pitkin BARNES is my maternal great great grandfather.
Pitkin died 31 January 1870 in Galveston, TX, but is buried in the GARLAND Cemetery in Leon County, TX along with two of his daughters.
Pitkin married Katherine KENNARD about whom I know nothing except that she died in 1845 in a location not yet known. I haven't yet found her in FindAGrave. Based on the death date we can assume that she died in Alabama.
My branch descends from Pitkin's daughter Serena BARNES b.15 Sep 1836 or 16 Sep 1835 in Merengo County, Alabama & d.11 Mar 1877 in Galveston, TX. Serena married 14 Aug 1855 Robert Simonton GOULD Sr. b.16 Dec 1826 in Rowan County NC. Robert was a lawyer in Centerville, Leon County, TX, was a Col in the Confederate Army (he raised Gould's 6th Texas Cavalry Regiment), a TX Supreme Court Judge and co-founded the U. of TX Law School. He died 30 Jun 1904. He & his daughter-in-law Rose Mildred (ADAM) GOULD raised my mother Rose Ellen GOULD (b.03 Dec 1894 in Austin, TX & d.26 May 1984 in Albuquerque, NM) because Robert Simonton GOULD Jr. (b.18 Dec 1858) died on 12 July 1895.
Pitkin's gravestone has his name as Dr. Pitkin BARNES. I have not yet discovered the source of his title Dr.
See my notes on each of nine photos. My cousin Jon GARLAND is in three of these photos. He took us to the GARLAND Cemetery to take these photos, & descends from Pitkin's daughter Sybil Ann who married William H. GARLAND.
This cemetery is on private property & is very difficult to find. Pitkin's daughters Mary (d.1862) and Sybil Ann (d. at age 45) are also buried in this GARLAND Cemetery. Also see photos of Sybil Ann's gravestone. She married William H. GARLAND. Sybil Ann (BARNES) GARLAND is Memorial #95404299.
According to Jon GARLAND's research, Mary BARNES (see Memorial # 95404198) married Samuel S. HUCKABY (see Memorial # 95404283) who was killed in the Civil War. They had one son Samuel R. HUCKABY who was left an orphan when Mary died in 1862. Jon speculates that Mary either died in childbirth or shortly thereafter. Jon's research indicates that Samuel was raised by Judge GOULD & family. Unfortunately, I neglected to get a photo of Mary's gravestone.
