Birth: May 22, 1921
Birmingham
Jefferson County
Alabama, USA
Death: Apr. 23, 1996
Eden
Erie County
New York, USA

Enlisted:
U.S. Marine Corps, Buffalo, NY
24 MAR 1940.
Brought to the recruiter by his uncle; he figured the Army would give Ron discipline and direction in life. Once Ron finished the oath of enlistment, they realized he was now in the Marines.

Promoted:
From Lance Corporal (LCpl) and received a Battlefield Commission to 2nd Lieutenant (2Lt) during combat operations at Guadalcanal, 1942. This campaign took place from August 1942 to February 1943. Most Marines were armed with M1903 bolt action rifles and M1905 bayonets. European Theatre forces carried the new M-1 Garand semi-automatic rifle and bayonet.

Member:
1st Marine Division
"The Old Breed"
Pacific Theatre of Operations (PTO)

Honorable Discharge:
11 FEB 1946
Captain (Capt)
U.S. Marine Corps

In speaking briefly of Guadalcanal:
"They had us cut off from the Navy pretty good. Those bastards knew exactly where we were. Before we got reinforcements, we were livin' off coffee and cigarettes for about two weeks."

Out of 60,000 Allied ground troops, 7,100 were killed, 4 captured, 29 ships were lost and 615 aircraft were lost. Just like on the war memorial found at Westbury-on-Trym, the Guadacanal Memorial echoes "When you go home, tell them of us and say: 'For your tomorrow, we gave our today.'"

Ron also saw action at New Britian, New Guinea and Cape Gloucester.
Served in the Occupation Forces of Japan. "You could smell (Japan) 100 miles out at sea."

Early 1940's:
His younger cousin, Jane, needed to learn the National Anthem as she was to lead her elementary class in song at school. After spending some time with Ron practicing, she was able to lead the entire school in a pitch perfect rendition of the Marine Corps Hymn!

Veteran:
Korean War
Recalled to Active Duty in 28 JAN 1952; promoted and became the youngest Major in the Marine Corps. Also served as Battalion Executive Officer (XO) at Camp Lejeune, NC.

Honorably Discharged:
04 FEB 1954
Lieutenant Colonel (LtCol)
U.S. Marine Corps

Married the former Nanette Constance Sweetland on 08 JUL 1952 in Angola, Erie, New York, USA.

Expert botanist, brewery advisor, hunter, woodsman, loving husband, father and grandfather, practical joker.

On Thursday June 4, 2015, Ronny was inducted into the Lake Shore School District Hall of Fame. Sons Les and Dave were in attendance.
