John D Smith was born to Zion Smith & Sarah IN TN. He came out to the territory of texas in the early 1830's with his parents and siblings.

his siblings were Willie "William", Sarah first wife of Samuel Neilson/Nelson, Samuel Smith

John was appointed as a Texas Ranger in 1832 by Stephen Austin. When the Texanican fought mexico and won their independence John D Smith was a captain in the militia. He ended up with over 4000 acres in Robertson co TX and owned what was known as Smiths point.

A man Samuel Nelson who John D Smith came out on the wagon train with, became one of his best friends and brother in law. John married his sister Elizabeth Nelson/Neilson. and Samuel married his sister Sarah Smith. Limestone County TX History book page 18

Samuel Nelson was also a texas ranger.

John D smith was appointed as a sheriff and then a judge in Robertson co Texas. He and his wife had four daughters. Emiline, Lynda, Fanny, & Samantha Anne

John D smith developed Pneumonia and died Mar/1847: the executor of his will was his brother in law Samuel Nelson and wife Elizabeth Smith.

Elizabeth Smith died a yr later leaving the four girls orphans. There was a fight over the land John D & Elizabeth owned. John's brother Willie took a horse and a black slave and left to never return. His other Samuel took the girls to LA. for their uncle & Aunt to become the guardians...

Sameul Nelson kept the estate intake though. he could not take the girls due to his wife dying and he had to raise his two kids along. he later married twice. Only One of his children lived to be an adult.

The girls were mistreated and when one married,her new husband kidnaped all the girls agin and brought them back to texas. were they all soon married and inherit their dads property..
