After growing up in Tennessee and getting married to Emma Virginia Dozier of Springfield they moved to California with their daughters Alice & Charlotte in search of work. It was during the war so he got a job with Lockheed and stayed there till after the war and then Smiley Burnett asked him if he wanted to go to Hollywood and be in the movies with him!! So off to Hollywood he went and was in quite a few western movies like Hallelujah Trail, The one and only original family band (with Buddy Ebsen), Hang um High (with Clint Eastwood), The Alamo, The man who shot Liberty Valance, To Kill a Mocking Bird, The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres & Petticoat Junction. He played bit parts in all these movies and he was one of the Gene Autry boys in his series. He loved to hunt and fish and cook in the back yard on his little BBQ. We had many a backyard dinner of Chicken Chop Suey hot off the grill. He loved his grandchildren and called them all his little darlings and we called him "Pap". During the years working at the Studio he also trained dogs for Rudd Weatherwax & Frank Inn for the movies. He had a small rock house with no ceiling that he kept the dogs in when they were being trained, we could walk up the side stairs and look down on the dog in training.
Pap had Gall Bladder Surgery and a gall stone got stuck in the tube and caused him to have a stroke. He lived for a while after that but was not the same he died of a heart attack on Feb 9, 1970. A year to the day of his death we had the San Fernando Earth Quake that leveled the hospital that was really close to their house in Kagel Canyon. He always told Grandma that he would come back and talk to her through a Raven and sure enough after he died and Grandma moved from the Canyon to Newhall a Raven would show up on her stoop outside of the trailer and she would say, I'll be back in a while I have to go out and talk to Daddy! She would stand out there talking to this Raven for about an hour and then come back in and go about her business. I saw it and could not believe it but it's true saw it with my own eyes!!
