DEVINE TO LEAD THE NEW BAND
Energetic Practice Will Begin at Once Under the Direction of Experienced Leader.
James Devine, the experienced band leader and all-around musician, has been secured to be director of the newly recognized City Band, which will get ready to give the people of Albuquerque this season the best music they have ever heard.
Mr. Devine was selected as the result of a meeting last night in the Stern Building of the special committee appointed for this purpose, consisting of Messrs W. L. Edgar, Damiano and M. J. McGuinness. The band consists of the best aggregation of musicians ever organized here and is going in to win.


James Devine was born on June 21, 1872 in Washington D. C. He was the son of Sergeant John Devine and Carmelita Garcia Devine. He was a well-known musician in New Mexico. He was the director of the Phoenix Indian School Band, the City Band of Albuquerque and the First Regiment Band. He was also a teacher of music. On November 21, 1892 he married Rebecca Gutierrez the daughter of Juan Gutierrez and Jesusita Garcia Gutierrez.

James and Rebeca were the parents of four children:
Nora Devine Garcia 1900-1984
Florence Devine 1902 - 1998
William L Devine 1905 - 1996
Vincent G Devine 1910 – 2001

James died on January 15th of 1926. He is buried in the Santa Barbara Cemetery with his parents, his mother-in-law and his wife and children.
