Levi was born in Indiana, possibly Posey County. He married Nancy Jane Pendleton. Nancy died. To this union were born James William Cross and Daniel Cross.
Levi Cross married his second wife, Elizabeth Hall Clevenger, a widow with children. On the 1860 census, Elizabeth and Levi were earmarked as newly wed within the year. Elizabeth was said to be buried between her two husbands in the Peach Orchard Cemetery, Barnhill, Wayne County, Illinois.

Elizabeth and Levi had one child that grew to adulthood: Nancy Jane Cross, buried in Koontz cemetery. The son of his first marriage, James William Cross died in 1914 in Wayne County, Illinois.
