Russell married the daughter of a pastor, Ola Kathryn Watts, known as Kathy in 1954.
They had five children: Russell Jr., Thelma, Scott, Charles, and Patricia.
Russell became a mechanic at Wienberg-Schumaker Gulf Oil Station in downtown Cocoa, Florida. It was while working here that he believes he received his calling and in 1971 he was ordained and assigned as pastor to the American Baptist Church. While continuing his pastoral duties, he reopened the Sterling Garage that had been closed since his step-fathers death.
