Ulysses Grant Jennings is the son of James Rufus and Catherine (Fennell)Jennings of Wayne County, Indiana. Catherine was the second of three wives of James Rufus Jennings. Catherine died at age 24 when Grant was only 4 years of age. Grant moved to Iowa from Indiana in March 1877 (per his obituary he was 9 years of age.) He had one "full" sister, Elnora (Jennings)McMurray; plus 3 half brothers and 2 half sisters.

He married Addirana Janette "Jennie" Nearmyer May 22, 1890 in Marion County, Iowa. The marriage license is on file at the Marion County Court House in Knoxville, Iowa.

Grant was a school teacher and farmer in southeast Prairie City, Iowa. He was a Sundy School teacher and Superintendent of Methodist church in Fairmont, Iowa.

Most of the older children born to Grant and Jennie were born on a farm just west of Fairmont in Jasper County; later the family moved to the farm south and east of Prairie City. The children of this union were:
