Torgeir was born in Troo where the family rented a house. Troo is a small farm at Kvisla 1 Km east of the farm Hegeset. According to local history in Norway, the family moved around in the county.

Torgeir came to American in 1884 with his mother, Margit. He used the name SAND on the passengers list. The "bygdebok" in Norway shows the record of emigrants who went to America:

1882 Sander Eiriksson Heggeset b. 1853, not married
1884: Margit Tololeivsdaughter (of) Troo, widow
1884: Torgeir Eirksson Sand b 1864, not married.

The Minnesota 1885 census in Lyon County, Minnesota shows Erickson, Torger, age 20 male, b. Norway. So initially he used his family name; by 1895 Minnesota census he is listed as Heggeset, Torger age, 29, born Norway; living with his mother, Heggeset, Margret, age 70 , b Norway in Minnesota 11 years.

In the 9th Distrcit Court of Lyon County, Minnesota, Torgier filed his intentions to become a US Citizen on November 1, 1886. Per the entry, he was born in 1864 in Norway, immigrated and landed in Port of Detroit on or about May 1884. He signed his name as Torger E Heggeses"

The Final citizenship papers were entered on December 9, 1896. Torger and his two brothers, Sanders and Tollef, all became US Citizens on this same date in Lyon County courthouse, Minnesots (Marshall County)...witnesses were L.S. Teigland (Tollef's brother-in-law) On this document he signed his name as Torger E Heggeseth.

In the 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930 Federal Census, he and is mother are listed in the Federal Census in Marshall County, LaBelle Twp of South Dakota.

On October 21, 1916 in Sisseston, Roberts County, South Dakota he marries Amanda (Johnson) Branch, a widow. They have 4 children.

On September 25, 1925 Torgier (from Hillhead, SD) attended the funeral of Helga (Soldal) Heggeseth and is listed as surviving "brother-in-law" in the obituary.
