Richard R Bladel was born in Rock Island, Illinois to Anna Catherine Ludolph and Charles Frank Bladel. His maternal grandparents, Elizabeth Kirsch and Frederick Henry Ludolph, were early citizens of Rock Island.
When Richard was 19 his father was murdered at his grocery story by a robber. Richard's brother, Frank, was in the back of the store at the time of the murder. He frightened the robbers away,by smashing a window which made a loud sound, but it was too late to save his father's life.
Richard and Frank continued their father's work. When Richard died, his obituary read, "Mr. Bladel was a second generation owner of Bladel's Grocery, 1201 12th St., Rock Island, which originated in 1902 and closed with his retirement in 1968. He was a lifetime member of Central Presbyterian Church, Rock Island. Survivors include a sister, Florence (Mrs. Frank) Bladel, Rock Island; a brother, Harold, Sarasota, Fla.; and two nephews."
