Prior to meeting her first husband, one of Gertrude's first employment, (maybe only job) was to work at the Singer Sewing Machine factory in South Bend, (info from South Bend City Directory).
Gertrude was first married to Elijah Sellers January 02, 1922 until his death in 1942. Gerti then married Harold Seese in 1946, until his death in 1967.
Gertrude worked nights at Ball Band with her husband Elijah. They started working there after taking a trip to Sebree Kentucky to work the farm that Elijah's father, (Elijah Washington Sellers Sr) owned. Elijah Sr would not take any welfare help. They left the two sons, (James and Douglas) at home while they worked nights at Ball Band. Gertrude became pregnant with a daughter, (Shirley) and had to quit Ball Band. She did not reenter the workforce until after Elijah Jr died. After he died, Gertrude worked at cleaning houses for about a year, then finally went back to work at Ball Band during the World War II years. She then found a job at Studebaker Aviation and worked there until she got remarried in June 1946. Then she stayed at home where she probably worked harder than she ever did as a widow. Work on the Seese farm consisted of raising chickens, planting corn, tending the apple orchard, and managing the bee hives for honey.
Gertrude last residence was in her daughter's home at 1334 S. 30th st. Gertrude, 66, died Monday at 8:30 a.m. in her home, after an extended illness. She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Lee, and two sons, James D. Sellers, and Douglas T. Sellers, and six grandchildren, and three sisters, Mrs Nettie Scott, and Mrs Alice Miller, both of South Bend, and Mrs Sheby Heltzel of Indianapolis.
Gertrude's funeral service was officiated by William Ballou minister of The River Park Church of Christ.
