DAVENPORT - Services for William Chase Barton, of Davenport, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park, with military services by Bettendorf Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9128. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport, with Masonic services at 8 p.m. by Trinity Lodge. Mr. Barton died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. He was chef at the Times Cafeteria in Davenport and an electrician at Bendix Corp. He retired in 1978. He was born Jan. 31, 1925, in Davenport, to Chase and Madeline (VanBunnen) Barton. He married Evelyn Jacobs on June 12, 1944, in Muskogee, Okla. He served in the Army during World War II, training at Camp Gruber in Muskogee. He served with the 242nd Regiment Co. G., 42nd Rainbow Division, 7th Army in Europe, where he was company cook. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal in 1983 from the then Assistant Secretary of Defense. He was a member of the church, Tri-L group at the church, Rainbow Division Veteran National Association, Rainbow Division Veteran Association Iowa Chapter, Rainbow Division Veteran Association 242 Infantry Chapter, Bettendorf VFW Post 9128, Davenport American Legion Post 26 and a life member of Military Order of the Purple Heart and Scott County Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans. He also was a member of Trinity Lodge 208 A.F. & A.M., Davenport Scottish Rite, Kaaba Shrine and Davenport Hi-12 Club. He also was a member of Davenport Radio Amateur Club who honored him with the Willis Otto Award. He was a charter member of Quad-Cities International Raceway Park Fan Club. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church Building Fund or Genesis Visiting Nurse Association Hospice Care. Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Patrick Taylor, Davenport; a son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Kimberly Barton, Davenport; grandchildren, Charlie and his wife Kristen, Knoxville, Tenn., Joe, Iowa City, Andy, Coralville, Iowa, Katie Taylor, Davenport, and Kyle and Spencer Barton, Davenport. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Loues Martin; and a nephew, Jim Martin.
