Aquilla Phelps was the older of two children born to Britton Phelps and Elizabeth Minerva Bowman, in June of 1822. He married Sarah Sallie Dye Hickey on Feb 28, 1861, in Washington, VA. Later that year, Aquilla served in the Civil War, in the 13th regiment of the regular Army.
Aquilla and Sarah had 10 children: Thomas J, William King, Nancy Jane, Martha Ann, Lucinda Rebecca, Rachel Elizabeth, Adolphus Lonzo "D", John H, Leander A, and Maudie Phelps.
Aquilla died of Bright's Disease on December 13, 1913, in Van Lear. Bright's is a term that was used in Aquilla's day to describe a number of kidney diseases; it is no longer used.
