Mary Ellen "Polly" King was born on Feb. 25, 1844 in the Marsh Creek area of lower McCreary Co., Kentucky, an area that was then part of Whitley County. She was the daughter of my GG-grandparents, Enos King (abt 1816-bet 1892/00) and Nancy Ann Angel (abt 1820-bet 1892/00), the second of their twelve known children.

Six of the seven US Censuses in which Polly appears show her as having been born in Kentucky. However, the year of her birth is somewhat debatable. Her headstone says she was born on Feb. 25, 1842. In the 1850, US Census, Polly (an old time nickname for Mary) is listed as being born in 1844, two years after her brother, Jackson "Jack" King (1842-1919). The 1860 census shows her two years younger than Jackson. Later censuses give her birth year as 1844 (two), 1841 and 1842. Born in the first half of the 1840s.

The 1920, 1910, 1900 & 1880 censuses all show Polly as unable to read/write so she may have not known the exact year of her birth. Her husband, Arch, is also shown as unable read or write. According to the censuses, none of Polly's siblings (Jackson, Jonathon, Omy & Archibald) could also neither read or write. Apparently, no one in the family attended school as no one, including the parents (Enos & Nancy), was literate.

In an old King family Bible, owned by a granddaughter, it is recorded that Jackson "Jack" King (1842-1919) was born on July 17, 1842 in Campbell Co., Tennessee. This birth year would correspond to the 1850 and 1860 censuses which show him as being born in 1842.

The unknown informant for Polly's delayed and undated death certificate gave her year of birth as 1846. However, she did not know the date of her birth nor did he/she know who her mother was. Apparently, the unknown informant knew only Polly's approximate age.

Considering all of the above information I believe the year of birth on Polly's headstone to be incorrect, that it should be 1844, not 1842. Her birth date, Feb. 25, may be correct.

As mentioned earlier, Polly was the daughter of Enos King and Nancy Ann Angel. It is thought that her parents moved from the Angel Valley area of Scott Co., TN to the Marsh Creek area of lower Whitley Co., KY around 1842-44. Enos had originally moved to Whitley county about 1819 from Campbell County with his parents. He returned to the Angel Valley area about 1836 and probably lived with his brother, Jackson H. King (1817-1857) who had married there about 1835. In 1912, the area of Whitley Co., KY that the two had moved from in Whitley Co. became part of the newly created McCreary Co.

Polly was a paternal granddaughter of Thomas Murray "Tom" King (1790-1880), the patriarch of the King Family in present day McCreary Co., KY. Her paternal grandmother, who she was probably named after, was Mary Rebecca "Polly" Cox (1800-1881). Her paternal grandparents helped start the United Baptist Church of Christ near Marsh Creek (Scott Co.) in 1841. Today the little church is known as the Upper Marsh Creek United Baptist Church, located on Highway 1470.

Both of her paternal grandparents are thought to have been born in North Carolina. Thomas, born in 1790, was probably born in the western part of old North Carolina that became the state of Tennessee in 1796. Mary was probably born in what is now present day North Carolina. Some believe she was born in the Ashe County area.

Polly's maternal grandparents were Archibald Andrew "Arch" Angel (1775-1847) and Nancy Ann Trammell (1782-1829), also born in old North Carolina. By 1804, the year of Arch & Nancy's marriage, both of their families had migrated to eastern Tennessee.

About 1862, Polly married Archibald Angel (1841-1901). Named after his paternal grandfather, he was born in Whitley Co., KY. Archibald was the son of James Angel I (1806-bet 1860/70) and Sarah "Sary" King (1813-bet 1860/70). Not long after their marriage , Archibald joined the Union Army (49th KY Infantry, Co.) and served as a private during the Civil War. Both Polly and Archibald are buried in the Angel Family Cemetery located in Angel Valley near Ketchen, Scott Co., TN.

Archibald's father, James, is thought to have been born in Washington Co., TN. He died in Scott Co., TN. He was the son of Archibald Angel and Nancy Ann Trammell. Yes, that is correct. Arch's mother, Sary, was born in the Capuchin area of Campbell Co., TN and, she too, died in Scott Co., TN. Sary was the daughter of William King I (abt 1785-bet 1841/50) and Elizabeth (abt 1789?-bet 1841/50), whose maiden name is currently unknown. William was an older brother of Thomas Murray "Tom" King.

Polly and Archibald were married for nearly 40 years and had eleven known children. There were probably other children who died at/near birth or who did not survive childhood. Their known children were Nimrod Angel (1861-1931), Enos Angel (1865-1958), Lewis Angel (1868- ?), James Simpson Angel (1871-1922), Nancy A. "Alvie" Angel (1873-1922), Colleen Carolina Angel (1874-1936), Celena Angel (1875- ?), William Angel (1879-1926), Rachel Leona Angel (1881-1966), Mary Ellen Angel (1882-1971) and Archibald "Arch" Angel (1884-1971).

Polly's husband, Archibald, died on July 11, 1901 in Scott Co., TN at the age of 60. He is buried in the Angel Cemetery (aka Angel-Wright Cemetery) and has a Civil War military grave marker.

Polly was about 76 when she died on July 10, 1920 near Stearns, McCreary Co., KY. The cause of her death on her death certificate is shown as "organic heart disease" and "old age". She too, is buried in the Angel-Wright Cemetery where her husband, Archibald, is buried.

Polly's headstone is one of 20 or so in the Angel Cemetery that is actually readable. This old family cemetery has 160+ burial markers that are now unreadable. Many of the markers are just field stones. There are also several unmarked grave sites.

The inscription on Polly's headstone reads "My God shall supply all of your needs."
