Martin Bennema was born in October 1906 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, the second son of August (Auke) Bennema and Ella Albertje) Zwart, both born in the Dutch northern province Friesland. He was named for his maternal grandfather, Marten Sjoerds Zwart.

In 1910 Martin Bennema (3 y, born in Illinois), his father August Bennema (40, Holland, immigrated in 1882), his mother Elle (40, Holland, immigrated in 1883), his siblings Gerrit (13, Illinois), Maggie (9, Illinois), Alice (7, Illinois) and Agnes (5, Illinois) were living in Ward 33 of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

In 1920 Martin Bennena (13), his father August Bennena (49), his mother Ella (50), his siblings Garret (22), Margaret (19), Ellise (17) and Agnes (15) were still living in Chicago, Ward 9, Cook County, Illinois.

His widow Florence Bennema died in November 1996 at the age of almost 91 years, very probably at her last known place of residence, Downers Grove, Du Page County, Illinois.
