Henry Joseph Barbour was born on December 1, 1920 in Newport, Maryland, (Charles County)to the late William and Nellie Barbour. He was the youngest child in a family of seven. His early life was spent in the same community where he attended elementary school and he was among the first four year class to graduate from the newly built Bel Alton High School.
Henry was married to Annie Kennedy in 1949. They have resided in Pisgah, MD since 1965. Out of their union two sons were born, Michael Sheldon and Jeffrey Kennedy (deceased). Many happy hours were spent as a family and at family gatherings.
During the ensuing years he was employed in Washington, D.C. at The Bureau of Engraving and in Bryans Road, Maryland as Chief Cook at the Smitty's Steak House Restaurant where working with people was most rewarding. Henry then made the decision to attend Bowie State College where he received his B.S. degree in Education. He taught in Charles County at Bel Alton High School for 10 years exhibiting a great love for teaching and working with students. His next teaching position was at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic School, Bryans Road, MD where he performed for twenty-five years. His love for teaching and his natural ability was a great talent. He spent endless time in naming preparation for his classes and he expected the same performance from his students. His motto was "Give to the world the best you have and the best will come back to you." Many sayings and verses were posted up and around his classroom.
Being well reared in the Catholic Church he showed great love for his Lord and Savior. Every morning he spent time in prayer and meditation and he contributed widely to his church by performing as a Minister of Communion and Lector during the Saturday and Sunday masses at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Indian Head, MD where he was an ardent member. Henry also contributed to many charitable organizations.
He received many awards, certificates and citations as a result of his performance as a great teacher. These accolades were from the parents and students of Star of the Sea School, State and National representatives including President Clinton, Bowie State Alumni Association where he was President, the Church and the Knights of Columbus where he was a member.
He retired after thirty-five years of service and continued to be active until his health failed and was received at the Genesis ElderCare Center where he was visited by family, friends, and a host of former students.
Life ended for Henry at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, October 18, 2004. A Life well lived, A Life well spent.
