John Rae Atwood
1921 ~ 2012
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather returned quietly to our Heavenly Father February 29, 2012.
He was born in Pleasant Grove on November 19, 1921, the fifth child of John Leslie and Hazel Carlisle Atwood. John was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married Norma King in the Mesa Arizona Temple on September 15, 1944. For 67+ years they have demonstrated the very essence of marriage.
John graduated from Pleasant Grove High School where he participated in track, basketball, and football. He has been a college basketball and football fanatic his entire life. John served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-1946, 345th Bomb Group, 5th Air Force, Air Apaches as a B-25 combat pilot in the Pacific. He graduated from the University of Utah School of Business in 1950, but quickly discovered that he enjoyed selling more than accounting. He sold audio/visual equipment and media for Deseret Book, Encyclopedia Educational, and eventually formed his own company, the Camera Company. He was very active and energetic and established a place in the hearts of many people. He loved reading and photography and could usually be found with a book in one hand and a camera in the other. He also loved gardening. His yard was always filled with beautiful flowers and his vegetable garden flourished. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman who shared many wonderful camping trips with his family and friends. He loved to travel but his favorite destination was where his heart was-his home. His foremost love was his wife along with his five children, 20 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren. His love and devotion to his family will sustain us for the rest of our lives.
Survived by his wife: Norma King Atwood; sons: John (Janene) and Mark (Sydney); daughters: Patricia Atwood, Lisa (Patrick) Davies; Linda (David) Winnie; Sister: Nell Pearce. Proceeded in death by his parents: John & Hazel; sisters: Hazel Atwood and Ava Winterton; brothers: Millen and Royal; granddaughter: Kylie Davies
