Amanda Kay Alford, 60, of Perry Street, died Monday, December 3, 2012 at her residence.
Mrs. Alford was born in Conway, a daughter of the late Homer Collom and Thelma Mae Johnson. She was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Collom.
She was a member of Jamestown Baptist Church where she served for over 30 years as Sunday School teacher with first through third grade children. "Miss Kay, " as she was affectionately known to so many, sewed 40+ years for practically every young lady in Conway and surrounding areas whether it was a dance costume, cheerleading outfit, prom attire, or wedding dress. She also stitched "many a dress and costume" during the 20 years that she worked for The Carolina Opry, and she prided them as extended family. "The next chapter" of her life as she called it started in May 2007, as she encountered cancer and led a beautiful and long battle that allowed her to share her testimony of faith with anyone who would listen. "Always seeing the glass as half full," Kay remained gracious throughout her challenging journey. Losing her eye in 2010 allowed yet another leap of faith as she held tightly to a favorite verse that she frequently delivered to her friends and family: "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see" Hebrews 11:1.
Surviving are her husband, Frankie R. Alford of Conway; a son, Clayton R. Alford and wife Wendy of Richmond, VA; a daughter, Amanda A. Roof and husband Justin of Conway; four grandchildren, Amanda Gray Alford, Anna Claire Roof, Dylan Roof, and Andrew Roof; two step grandchildren Austin and Collie Rogers, and a brother, James Bryan Collom and wife Cindy of Aynor.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Friday at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Kyle Randle, Rev. Robbin King, and Rev. Lynn Peters officiating. Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
The family extends sincere gratitude to the host of doctors and medical staff at the Medical Univeristy of South Carolina who enabled her to live many years more than the initial diagnosis. Memorials may be sent to Jamestown Baptist Church Children & Youth Ministries, 2501 9th Avenue, Conway, SC 29527.
