Rex Amend, 76, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at Presbyterian Manor, Sterling.
Mr. Amend was born April 15, 1935, at Sterling to Bruce and Laura Proffitt Amend. He returned to Sterling in 2006 after living in Holyrood. He was a graduate of Hutchinson Junior College and Sterling College with a Bachelor’s degree in education. He was a retired school teacher and coach at Quivira Heights schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran with service during the Korean War, a member of the Sterling American Legion and a former Holyrood city council member.
He married Janet Arell Jan. 29, 1953, in Las Vegas, N.M. She survives.
Other survivors include: a sister, Connie Green of Sterling; two brothers, Charles William Amend of El Dorado, and Larry Dean Amend of Sterling; a sister-in-law, Lola Amend of Lyons; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Robert, Don and Arden “Pete” Amend.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at the Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery with military honors by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Sterling Library, Hospice Care of Kansas or a charity of the donor’s choice in care of the funeral home.
