Dixie Ann Mason Howard was the only child of Margaret and Gordon Mason. She lived in Houston for a time until lung issues forced a move to La Grange, Texas, where she graduated from high school. After receiving her teaching degree from Southwest Texas Teachers' College (now Texas State), she took a position teaching high school English at Pearsall High School. She was introduced to the mayor's son, Jack Howard, and after a whirlwind courting while he was home on leave, they married and she followed him on his military and Eastern Airline career. After his early death, she was responsible for all parents until their deaths. Dixie was a wonderful grandmother to her six grandchildren.
