John Howard Gray was one of ten children born to John and Mary Cook Gray. He was trained as a machinist as a young man and was his occupation most of his life. He left with his family to travel to Minnesota in 1857. He worked in the St Anthony area of the Twin Cities most of his life except when he farmed in the Livonia area of Sherburne County, Minnesota from about 1879 to 1885. He homesteaded there and lived in a small log cabin with just his dog and his gun. He never married and had no children.
