Florence Agnes's mother Florence Jane (Watson) Straw was born on April 6, 1848 in Portland Maine to Samuel Newall (b: 1821-1852) and Eliza Ann (Pierce) Watson (b: 1822-1857). Her brother, Frederic Eugene Watson (1846-1934), was born in Bangor, Maine. The 1850 Federal Census shows them together as a family.

Samuel died in 1852 at the age of 31 and Eliza in 1857 at the age of 30. They are buried in the South Levant (Maine) Cemetery and the children were separated from each other. They would come together again in Wells, Minnesota.

Frederick was sent to live with Samuel's sister Susan Weston and her husband in Hillsdale, Michigan in 1854 where he would graduate from the Hillsdale College in 1869. Later, he would "read" the law and become an attorney.

Florence Jane was sent to live with Charles King and his wife Mary in Bangor, Maine in the same year. (To date the relatioship between Florence Jane and the Kings has not been determined.) The Kings would move to the Boston area were Charles was in the lumber business.

It is not known how Florence Jane met her husband Dr. Daniel Straw. They were married on October 16, 1872 in Somerville, Massachusetts and moved to Wells, Minnesota.

Daniel and Florence Jane would have five children. They lost their first child, Nelly, in 1872. On January 23, 1876 Florence Agnes Straw was born. Frederic Watson Straw followed in 1878. In 1881 Henry Myers Straw was born. He was nicknamed Hal. Last, but hardly least, came Constance Elizabeth Straw in 1888. She was known as Con.
