DEATH OF AN OLD CITIZEN

Mrs. Catherine Beard, for 44 years a resident of West Lodi, Seneca county, died after a short illness, at the home of her daughter, Catherine Neikirk, in Adams township, August 29th, 1870, aged 86 years, 1 month, 16 days. The deceased was born in Washington county, Maryland, in 1784, and lived there until 1826, when, having lost her husband, she emigrated with a large family of children to Ohio and settled in the wood on the site now occupied by West Lodi, where she reared her children amid the hardships and trials incident to pioneer life in Ohio.

Notwithstanding the difficulties with which she had to contend and the vast amount of hard labor she had to perform in order to raise her family, under such circumstances, she lived long enough to be able to count her descendants by the hundred, as follows:

Children: 9, Now living: 4, Dead: 5
Grandchildren: 65, Now living: 48, Dead: 17
G't Grandchildren: 79, Now living: 70, Dead: 9
Total: 153, Now living: 122, Dead: 31

Mother Beard united with the Lutheran Church in early life, in Maryland, and remained a consistent member of the same until her death, which she awaited with anxiety and hailed with joy. Her funeral services took place Tuesday, August 30th, at the Lutheran Church, Adams township, attended by most of her numerous relatives and many others, when a discourse was delivered by the writer, based upon Rev. 14:13, "She rests from her labors and her works follow her."
