George Baker, Farmer, Sec 17, P O Payson. He was born in Hampshire Co, VA, May 19, 1803.
His parents, Michael Baker and Catherine (Devore) were natives of Pennsylvania and were married in Bedford, PA, where they remained and had a family of 9 children, of whom, George Baker was the 3rd, and finally died there.
Mr Baker's father being a farmer, he was brought up in that vocation, and did not "depart from it." He married Anna Lyon, daughter of Elisha and Ellen (Hogelin) Lyon, who was born in the same county, Oct 12, 1809.
Their marriage took place, Feb 21, 1828.
Mr Baker came west on a prospecting tour in 1846, and bought land in Adams County; arranged to have some improvements made thereon, and returned home. He brought his family out in the spring of 1851 and settled on the farm where he now lives, that fall.
They had a family of 10 children:
1) Elvina C Baker (wife of Henry Long)
2) Rachel E Baker (deceased)
3) Martha A Baker (wife of W N Caldwell)
4) Michael H Baker
5) Mary R Baker (wife of J W Sinnock)
6) Sarah A Baker (wife of J L Thomas)
7) Elizabeth E Baker
8) Richard H Baker
9) Virginia Baker (deceased)
10) George W. L. Baker, now conducting the home farm.
Mrs Baker died Aug 29, 1878, after having passed their "golden wedding." They had been members of the M.E. Church for 46 years, of which Mr Baker had been a liberal supporter. He held the office of Magistrate for many years in Virginia. He owns 148 acres of land in Payson Township, 148 in Fall Creek, and 190 in Pike County. His estate is estimated at $50,000.
