Served as Federal Judge in the US District Court, Cleveland, Ohio, and was known as "The Hanging Judge." Also served as an assistant Cuyahoga County prosecutor up to 1926, when his boss, Edward Stanton, was bounced out of office. James started a law firm in the Terminal Tower building with Stanton in 1926-1927.
Many at the Cleveland Marshall College of Law are still awarded the Judge James C. Connell Award for Outstanding Student in Criminal Law.
