Justine (Meyer/Meier) Boelter was the wife of Gottlieb Boelter, and the mother of Michael and John Boelter.
Gottlieb, Justine, and their son John were massacred on the morning of 18-Aug-1862 in the Middle Creek Settlement which was one of the first attacks by the Dakota during the Dakota Wars of 1862. Also killed was all of Michael's family, and John's daughter Amelia died of starvation hiding in the woods with her mother Justina (Wendtlandt) Boelter and her sister Ottilie.
In Justina's accounting of the massacre, she indicated that she found her mother-in-law (Justine (Meyer/Meier) Boelter) on the floor of Michael Boelter's house. She had been decapitated by the Indians.
Note that Justina was married to John at the time of the massacre. A year and a month after the massacre Michael and Justina who both lost their spouses married.
